Thank god it doesn’t list how many hours I spent reading all those RSS items… jeez…

To be fair a lot of this is scanning for items to list on GreenDeals Daily.

I’m back in Ottawa now, it’s cold and snowy here but I actually enjoy the change. In Louisiana you don’t feel time passing as well because there aren’t huge differences between the seasons. Don’t get me wrong though, after a few weeks of this I’ll be all set to head back to the warm south (and Emily of course!).

Emily and I went on a lovely canoe trip in the Atchafalaya Basin a couple of days ago. The weather cooperated and it was incredibly beautiful and serene. I still can’t quite figure out why I’m going back up to Canada for the holidays… Check out my Flickr page for more photos from the trip.

I just finished watching Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky’s documentary Manufactured Landscapes. It depicts the massive scale of industry and resource extraction in places like China. Scary and beautiful.

This would have been handy in school - BibMe lets you type in a bunch of ISBNs and automatically formats a bibliography in any one of several popular styles. This type of citation management tool has existed for a while but this one is easy and free. I hate to think of the number of hours this would have saved me if I’d known about it in school.

I find it really odd what gets picked up and linked to and what doesn’t - and this is no exception. My review of the Envirosax Shower Timer got linked to by two very popular blogs: Crave and Gizmodo.

Emily and I started hearing noises and seeing mouse droppings in our house a couple of weeks ago. So I went to the store and picked up a few of these neat humane traps - the “Mice Cube”. There a little one-way trapdoor that keeps the mouse from escaping once it ventures inside to eat a delicious peanut butter cracker. Well, after a week of no success and having the mouse saunter out into the middle of the kitchen floor to see what I was watching on TV twice, we decided more drastic measures were necessary.
On my second visit to the store I picked up some of these good old mouse-killin’ traps. 20 minutes after setting them up we heard a snap, 20 minutes after that another snap. After a week of trying with the ethical traps the classic trap solved our mouse problem in 40 MINUTES. I haven’t seen or heard a mouse since.
Now to be fair the killer traps were placed in a new spot we hadn’t tried with the other traps, a spot that must have had more mouse-traffic than where we had tried before. Perhaps though, there’s something to be said for a design that hasn’t changed much in over 100 years.
